OBJECTIVES:

  1. To provide appropriate training and tools for effective STI science policy analysis/studies.
  2. To provide a platform for the YSN to review, discuss and disseminate the relevant policy issues on Science, Technology & Innovation (STI).
  3. To strengthen YSN capacity on policy analysis and formulation.

This programme is the first in a two-part series involving two speakers; Ms. Zaharah Binti Mohd Abd Kader, The Deputy Head of Cluster (Public Policy), The National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) and Ms. Nitia Samuel, Principal Analyst, Head of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Strategic Studies Division, Academy of Sciences Malaysia.

Ms. Zaharah gave an overview of public policy, including the types of policies, the policy-making process in Malaysia, and the features of good policy.

Ms. Nitia discussed the issue bridging science, policy, and action for impact, highlighting the exemplary ASM Strategic Studies, ASM 5Cs approach, the importance of networking and communication in influencing policymaking, and the NPSTI 2021-2030. A special case study was also shared on the topic of nurturing future talent.

A Kahoot interactive session on NPSTI 2021-2030 was also held to assess participants’ understanding of current science policy.

Puan Hazami started the workshop with her talk entitled “Charting the future for Malaysia through Science Policy: What makes an impactful policy paper”. Puan Nitia session followed with a focus on the hands-on/ practical session on an ASM’s Special Interest Group (SIG): “Developing industry ready talent for STI-based enterprise post COVID-19″.
